Theft Insurance

Break-ins don't just cost you what's taken. There's the damaged door, the days lost, the stress and the paperwork.

Theft insurance covers stock, equipment and money that's stolen, as well as the damage caused by the thieves getting in.

What it can cover

  • Theft following forced entry
  • Damage to doors, locks and windows from a break-in
  • Stolen stock, equipment and tools
  • Money, in some policies, with limits
  • Theft by attempted break-in

What to check

  • Security conditions. Locks, alarms or monitoring may be required.
  • Forced entry. Some policies only respond if there's evidence of forced entry.
  • Employee theft. Usually separate from standard theft.
  • Money limits. Cash is often capped or covered only in a safe.

Case study

An example

Thieves cut through a roller door at a trade supply shop and take tools and stock worth $18,000. The door is wrecked. The policy responds to the stolen items and the door repair, provided the shop met its alarm and locking conditions.

Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.
