Contents Insurance
Take a walk through your business and look at what's in it. The stock on the shelves, the tools, the desks, the computers, the shopfront you paid to fit out. If it all disappeared tomorrow, could you afford to replace it?
Contents insurance covers the things inside your premises. You don't need to own the building to need it. Tenants and owners both carry contents risk.
What counts as contents
- Stock and raw materials
- Furniture, shelving and display units
- Plant, machinery and tools
- Office equipment and computers
- Fit-out and improvements you've paid for
What it can cover
- Fire, storm and water damage
- Theft and break-ins
- Malicious damage
- Impact damage
- Flood, if it's included in your policy
Where people get caught out
Stock levels
The sum insured is set for a quiet month, then a busy season hits.
Old equipment
Insured for what it cost, not what it costs to replace today.
Items in the yard or a vehicle
These are often limited or excluded.
Fit-out
Tenants forget it's their responsibility, not the landlord's.
Case study
An example
A retail shop in the Hills District has a break-in overnight. The thieves take stock, smash a display cabinet and damage the till. The owner claims for the stolen stock, the cabinet and the till. Because the stock sum insured was updated before Christmas, the claim pays out in full. If it had been set at last year's figure, the owner would have been short.
Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.

Contents insurance FAQs
Yes. Your landlord insures the building, not your stock, equipment or fit-out.
Add up what it would cost to replace everything today, including your busiest stock levels. We can help you work it out.
Only if the policy says so. Tell us if you move stock around.
Often not. That's usually a separate cover. Ask us if it's a concern.
