Goods in Transit Insurance
The moment your goods leave your premises, they're no longer covered by your contents policy. They're on the road, in a van or truck, or in someone else's depot. That's where goods in transit cover comes in.
It protects goods while they're being moved, whether you're doing the driving or you've paid a carrier to do it.
Who it suits
- Wholesalers and distributors
- Tradies carrying tools and materials
- Couriers and removalists
- Retailers sending stock between sites or to customers
- Food and beverage suppliers
What it can cover
- Accident, rollover and collision
- Theft of goods, including from a vehicle, subject to conditions
- Fire and storm damage
- Loading and unloading damage, in some policies
What to check
- Theft conditions. Many insurers need the vehicle locked and the load secured.
- Refrigerated goods. Breakdown of the unit may be a separate extension.
- The limit per vehicle or per trip.
- Whether goods are covered while sitting in a depot overnight.
Case study
An example
A furniture supplier's delivery van is involved in an accident on the way to a customer. The van is repairable, but the load is damaged beyond sale. The motor policy covers the van. Goods in transit cover is what pays for the furniture.
Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.
