Hook-In and Towed Vehicle Cover

Your tow truck policy covers your truck. It usually does not cover the customer's car on the hook or on the tray.

Hook-in (towed vehicle) cover is the extension that responds when the vehicle you are towing is damaged during loading, transit or unloading.

What it can cover

  • Damage to a towed vehicle during loading or unloading
  • Damage while the vehicle is on the tray or under tow
  • Limits per vehicle, set to the type of work you do

What to check

Limit per vehicle

Luxury, commercial and heavy units may need a higher limit than a standard sedan.

Excluded work

Some wordings limit recovery of buses, trucks or machinery. Disclose what you tow.

Your own truck cover

Hook-in does not replace tow truck and fleet insurance for your unit.

Case study

An example

A strap slips while a sedan is being winched onto the tray. The car's bumper and underbody are damaged. Hook-in cover is what can respond to the customer's vehicle. The truck's own policy only covers the truck.

Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.

Hook-in and towed vehicle FAQs

Not normally. You need hook-in or towed vehicle cover for that exposure.

No. Hook-in is for vehicles under tow. Goods in transit is for cargo and freight.

If you move other people's vehicles, you usually need it — accident or trade.
