Trailer Insurance
Trailers get towed everywhere, loaded and unloaded, parked on streets and left on sites. They also get stolen, a lot.
Trailer cover protects the trailer itself, and depending on the policy, the gear on it.
What it can cover
- Accidental damage and collision
- Theft and attempted theft
- Fire, storm and flood
- Towing and recovery
- Fixed equipment on the trailer, with the right extension
What to check
- Detached cover. Is the trailer covered when it's not hooked up to a vehicle?
- Load cover. The trailer might be covered, but not what's on it.
- Third party damage. Often covered under the towing vehicle's policy, but check the wording.
- Security conditions. Wheel locks and hitch locks may be required.
Case study
An example
A landscaper leaves a loaded trailer outside the yard overnight. Thieves hitch it up and take it with $6,000 of equipment on board. If the policy covers theft of the trailer and its fitted equipment, the claim can respond. If the equipment was loose, it would need tools and equipment cover.
Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.

Trailer insurance FAQs
Often for liability, but not for damage or theft of the trailer itself.
It depends on its value and what you carry in it. Cheap to insure, expensive to replace.
Sometimes. Registration is separate to insurance.
