Tools & Equipment Insurance
For a tradie, the toolbox is the business. A theft from the ute, a drop off a roof or a fire at the shed can cost thousands, and you can't work until it's sorted.
Tools and equipment insurance covers the tools you carry from job to job, in the vehicle, on site or stored at home.
Who it suits
- Electricians, plumbers, carpenters and builders
- Landscapers and mechanics
- Technicians and contractors
- Anyone who carries valuable gear between sites
What it can cover
- Theft from vehicles, sites and storage
- Accidental damage
- Fire, storm and flood
- Tools in transit
- Hired and borrowed tools, in some policies
What to check
- Locked vehicle conditions. Many policies require tools to be out of sight and locked.
- Overnight storage. Tools left in a vehicle overnight can be excluded.
- Value of each tool. Items over a set value may need to be listed.
- On-site theft. Often has conditions or limits.
Case study
An example
An electrician's van is broken into overnight and $14,000 of tools is stolen. If the policy covers theft from a locked vehicle, and the van was locked with tools out of sight, the claim can respond. If the tools were left on show or the van was unlocked, it may not.
Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.

Tools and equipment insurance FAQs
Usually not. Tools that go off site need their own cover or an extension.
Only if the policy says so. Check before assuming.
