Third Party Fire & Theft

Third party, fire and theft sits between basic third party cover and full comprehensive. It covers what you might owe other people, plus your own vehicle if it's stolen or burnt, but not accidental damage to your own vehicle.

It suits a lot of work vehicles, older utes and second vehicles where full comprehensive isn't worth the cost.

What it can cover

  • Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in an attempted theft
  • Your vehicle if it's damaged by fire
  • Legal liability, up to the policy limit

What it doesn't cover

  • Accident damage to your own vehicle
  • Storm, hail or flood damage, in many policies
  • Injury to people, which is covered by CTP

Case study

An example

A tradie's older ute is stolen from outside his home and later found burnt out. With third party, fire and theft cover, he can claim for the vehicle. If he'd reversed it into a pole instead, his own repair would be his cost.

Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.

Third party fire and theft FAQs

Usually, yes, because it covers less.

Often not. Compare the wording carefully.

It depends on its value. If you couldn't afford to replace it, comprehensive may be better.
