Road Registration & Float Insurance

If it has plates, it needs to be insured properly. Floats, trailers and registered plant are often towed behind a vehicle, sometimes carrying valuable cargo like horses, vehicles or machinery.

Compulsory third party (CTP) cover is part of registration for the vehicles that need it. Everything beyond that, like damage to the float, the load and liability to others, is extra.

What it can cover

  • Accidental damage to the float or registered plant
  • Theft and fire
  • Third party property damage
  • Towing and recovery
  • The load, as a separate extension where applicable

What to check

  • Whether the float is covered when it's not attached to a vehicle
  • Whether the load, such as a horse or a vehicle, is covered or needs a separate policy
  • How and where the float is used, for work or recreation
  • Whether registration conditions apply

Case study

An example

A horse float is being towed to a show when the driver brakes hard and the float rolls. The float is damaged and blocks the road. A policy with float cover can respond to the repair and third party damage. The horse would need separate animal cover. See our Animal Mortality page.

Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.
