Hot Works Insurance
Welding, flame cutting, angle grinding, soldering, torch-applied roofing. Anything that makes heat, sparks or flame is a fire risk, and insurers treat it that way.
If you do hot work, or you hire contractors who do, your policy may have conditions or exclusions attached to it. Getting this wrong can mean a declined fire claim.
Who it affects
- Welders, fabricators and metal workers
- Plumbers, roofers and builders
- Maintenance contractors
- Any business that has hot work done at its premises
What insurers usually expect
- A hot work permit system for each job
- Fire extinguishers and a fire watch during and after the work
- Clearing combustible materials from the work area
- Qualified, licensed operators
- Written procedures and records
What can go wrong
- A policy that excludes or limits fire from hot work if the conditions aren't met
- A contractor's liability not extending to damage to your property
- Fire starting hours after the work finishes, when no one is watching
Case study
An example
A contractor is cutting a steel beam in a warehouse. A spark lands in packaging material and smoulders. Two hours after the crew leaves, a fire starts. The policy requires a permit and a fire watch for an hour after hot work. Neither was done. The insurer may reduce or decline the claim.
Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.

Hot works insurance FAQs
Yes, if it's part of your business or regularly happens on site. We'll help you disclose it.
Possibly, but it depends on the contract and their limits. Ask to see their certificate of currency.
Many policies ask for one. Even if yours doesn't, it's good practice.
