Fit-Out & Contents Insurance
When you take over a shop or office, the walls and roof belong to the landlord. Almost everything else you've spent money on belongs to you: the counters, the flooring, the lighting, the partitions, the cool room, the signage.
Fit-out and contents insurance covers that investment, along with the stock, furniture and equipment you keep in it.
What it can cover
- Counters, joinery, shelving and built-in fittings
- Flooring, ceilings, lighting and partitions you installed
- Signage and shopfront work
- Stock, furniture, equipment and computers
- Damage from fire, storm, water, theft and malicious damage
What to check
- Your lease. It will say who has to insure what, and sometimes asks for proof.
- Whether the sum insured reflects what the fit-out cost, not what you remember paying.
- Whether you've done upgrades since you first insured it.
Case study
An example
A dental clinic spends $180,000 fitting out a tenancy. A burst pipe in the unit above floods the ceiling and floor. The landlord's policy repairs the building, but the clinic's joinery, flooring and equipment are its own to replace. With fit-out and contents cover, they can claim for it.
Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.
