Electronic Equipment Insurance

Most businesses run on electronics. Point-of-sale systems, laptops, servers, cameras, scanners, medical devices, audio and lighting. When one fails or goes missing, work stops.

Electronic equipment insurance is made for this kind of gear. It often goes further than standard contents cover, especially for breakdown and portable items.

What it can cover

  • Accidental damage, such as drops and spills
  • Theft, including from vehicles, depending on conditions
  • Power surge and electrical breakdown
  • Fire and water damage
  • Data restoration costs, in some policies
  • Portable items used off site

What it usually doesn't cover

  • Wear and tear
  • Software faults
  • Items under manufacturer warranty, for breakdown
  • Items left unattended in a vehicle, in some policies

Case study

An example

A photographer's camera and two lenses are damaged when a bag is knocked off a table at an event. The equipment is worth over $9,000. With electronic equipment cover that includes portable items, the repair or replacement can be claimed, less the excess. Under standard contents cover, the claim would likely have been refused because the gear was away from the premises.

Illustrative example only. Cover depends on your policy wording.
